Where artists share their process

Sketched publishes essays, interviews and videos, as well as limited edition prints, to give people the opportunity to learn from a sweep of world-renowned artists and designers. Providing new ways to understand how artists work; to discover their motivation, process and inspiration’,

Richard Wilson’s twirling, spinning sculpture Slipstream was inspired by the daring antics of stunt planes and air racers. It now hangs in Heathrow’s Terminal 2, about to take flight over the departure bridge.

For his Sketched collection, we brought together a set of 9 prints taken from Richard’s early sketches, concepts and ideations of the Slipstream project as a limited edition portfolio – exhibiting the drawings together for the first time.

Behind the scenes

For Sketched, we were invited to visit Richard aboard his earlier project A Slice of Reality – a vertical slice through a sand dredger on the Thames that forms part of The Line art trail in East London. Here, Richard had set up a makeshift art studio where he continues to develop ideas and drawings for his future art installations.

This fantastic location set the scene for an amazing conversation, delving deep into how Richard’s process and ideas and the fantastic insights into what it took to bring the Slipstream project to life.
