Where artists share their process

Founded in 2021 by Plinth and Holmes Studios, Sketched publishes essays, interviews and videos, as well as limited editions, to give people the opportunity to learn from a sweep of world-renowned artists and designers. ‘We want to provide new ways to understand how artists work; to discover their motivation, process and inspiration’,

Lucy Holmes, co-founder

The people behind the work

Sketched is a new platform for exploring the nature of creativity, publishing essays, interviews and videos, as well as limited-edition prints of pages taken straight from artists’ working sketchbooks. From Conrad Shawcross to Michael Rakowitz, and from Maggi Hambling to Richard Wilson.

“Our hope is that these limited-edition prints chart the birth and development of a work or project. I’ve always been fascinated by artists and creatives and how that mentality works. Lucy and I want to provide a unique insight into the creative process.”

Paul Franklyn, co-founder

The sum of all of the parts

Sketched is a new way to understand what’s inside an artist’s mind, and to discover more about their process. We are exploring the nature of creativity. In some cases restriction is a necessary part of creativity. With Sketched we have no restrictions but an artist's creative process. We start somewhere and see where it goes.

All touch points

It is important that we make our content available across all platforms. With each artist we work hard to generate a comprehensive narrative. We output this across print, digital content and social media. The heart of the idea was to make art more accessible to all.

The visual identity

It’s a new experience for us to be the client and the designers. We needed something that was expressive of the idea. It felt right that it was based on a palette of grey.

From the start we had no visual content, so we led with words. As a platform we are set back to showcase the artists and their work. They take centre stage. So we wanted to design in neutrality.
